Split, Croatia

After a long bus ride from Plitvice Lakes National Park, we arrived in Split around 11 pm and were lucky enough to find a nice hostel.

We began the next day with a tour of the underground complex of Diocletian's Palace. Only a small portion of the palace is still intact on the ground level...
But the floor plan of the basement directly mirrors the floor plan of what was once the ground level of the palace.

The palace dates back all the way to the 4th Century AD. The famous Roman Emperor, Diocletian, began construction on the palace in preparation for his retirement in 305 AD. The city of Split was once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

We walked around the city and checked out an outdoor market after touring the palace...

Then we headed to the beach...

The water was crystal clear and the perfect temperature. The only negative was the rocky beach, but I can't complain.
We swam through the arch; it felt like a roller coaster because of the tidal movement

Had coffee on the balcony of our hostel afterwards; pretty awesome view.

Had a burger for dinner, but it was Croatian style...

We have to eat cheap while on vacation; we are still poor college students.

We went on a fun bar crawl that night that started at the Imperium Nightclub.

Overall, couldn't ask for much more from this great old Roman city known as Split.
